Toad, I have used gelatine glue and (red Label/Original) Titebond. But I also do am interesting scarf where the scarf is under the fretboard (see my pics on my home page). 13 deg is my standard angle. Works out REALLY good.

Sam and Alan are right on. You shouldn't need a truss rod for anything 4 or less strings. I'm doing laminated necks (2 pieces of 1x2 glued and sawn perpendicular to make a pseudo quartersawn neck). That too is working our really well.

I have made scarf joints between 4 and 30 degrees with simple wood glue and no failures..... make sure your surfaces are smooth and flat and allow plenty of cure before tensioning...

Could you explain that dowel joint please.

How many strings? Metal or nylon?

Red oak is pretty tough. A good quarter-sawn neck SHOUOLDN'T need a truss rod for three strings. A truss rod is handy for fine-tuning neck angle, though.

I'm using a dowel joint on my scarf, just to keep things from going catawampus.

I have a question for those of you who have used a scarf joint to make a peg head. What kind of glue have you used? I am a woodworker so I understand what happens between the wood and the glue and the large gluing surface of a scarf joint but have any of you experienced any problems with the joint failing under string tension? I used an 8 degree scarf joint. One last question. The necks I am making are quarter sawn red oak, do you feel there is a need to put a rod in the neck to prevent bowing under string tension?

I learned a lot on this first build and because it turned out so good it has opened a floodgate of ideas and changes I need to make on future builds. My neck is thicker than necessary and heavy with the 1/4 X 1/2 flatbar I installed as a truss. I can whittle away at lots of meat on the neck to make for a more comfortable hold. Simple is good so I think all of my builds will be kept that way. My action is a little high 4mm above the face of the neck, but I can live with it for now. My CBG is fretless right now but I will do some very soon, I think it will help with some of the dampened vibrations on that recycled wood neck, it is far from perfect on it's surface.

I'm just waiting for my two short videos to upload to CBN. I have finished my CBG and the vids are the sound check with my little computer speaker amplifier. I'm a happy camper all around, I built my guitar and got my amp together for under $20.00, ya gotta love it!!!!

I checked my electrics today for one last time after installing some steel strings to test my mag pup. I cannot believe how clean and nice it sounds. I will post pics and a sound test vid tomorrow or the next day. I have to wait for the glue to dry on my top. She's all sealed up now, there's no turning back now....LOL I am truly amazed at how rich it sounds even without the pup and piezo's. The piezo's aren't harsh or zinggy at all. The mag pup makes it sound really mellow and deep. Absolutely no feedback or buzz, it's beautiful. I'm in love. But it does need frets I think. The higher notes in particular sound dull. If I hold a temporary fret wire on the fret board and apply finger pressure the note is much brighter and crisp.
