I'm with Sam on this Craig. I secure my lids down with screws and secure the neck to the lid with screws too. This is so if I need to get into the box at any time I can. somewhat like Sam says, I glue small 1/2" blocks to the sides/corners which are what I put the screws into. I think I have some pics here so take a look. I'm having to rework a CBG for this guy I just built for and having the lid removable is a GREAT help. Will take me about 30 mins versus having to remove the glue.

Craig,

Two seperate issues.... If you're building on the bottom or on a top with a lip so that the bottom hinges away from the top, then glue, screw, or do anything you want to affix the neck to the "top" (vibrating surface).... But, it the top hinges over the neck, the secure your neck to the box itself to blocks (spacers) that are first glued to the box. Then the tension of the strings will hold the lid (top) firmly in place... but still giving you access to the box for repairs....

So, what is the "preferred" method of securing the lid if not gluing it down? I made the extra effort of filing my neck so that it only contacts the lid a 1/2 inch at either side hole. I was planning on a couple finishing nails at those points, should I just do that all around rather than glue?

Theory.... rock solid sides and freely vibrating top =best tone and volume...

practice.... very rarely a top will vibrate/rattle....

mostly overkill.... IMHO

I just got done reading all the comments and stories on the "Wall of shame". There were a few that said they glued the tops down too soon. My question is, why do you glue the tops down at all. Is it because the unsecured lid might vibrate or what?
