Thought I'd post some photos. This one shows my 5th build. It was made with all hand tools. Its fretless with a 25.5 inch scale and tuned GDg. The fret marks and dots were made useing a wood burner. The action is about an 1/8 of an inch at the nut and about a 1/4 inch at the bridge.
Sorry about the poor quality of photos in advance.
Sean,
If you're set on a low E, I'd recommend that you go for a pretty heavy gauge string. Look for something between 0.048 and 0.052.... if you go lighter you won't be tensioning it up enough to get a "bright"/"bite-y" sound out of the box.

Wichita Sam
I'm about 95% of the way through building a one stringer and I'm hoping to stick on a low E.(Coz the singer in the band just loves songs in E).
Scale length wiill be 25 inches and to begin with it will be fretless.. The neck is really thin about 30mm across. Tonight's job is fixing the neck to the body.
If you can await a couple of days I might have it strung up by Saturday.. the Queen comes to visit us tomorrow and the town is off limits, so it'll be a day before I can get into the music shop.
suprrrNaut,
That headstock should be fine. If you're using economy tuners, then screw points will stagger the seam. And, assuming the glue job is good, it should be plenty strong enough.

Wichita Sam
I purchased a pre fab neck where the oak head is flanked either side by pieces of walnut. It looks beautiful, but I believe the walnut was just glued onto the sides of the head to give it it's shape. To fit the tuning pegs in place, if I have to have it placed on the walnut that's glued in place, do you think this will hold? Or should I use a thin piece of laminate or metal behind the neck to make it more secure. It doesn't look flimsy at all, and Im sure I'm just being paranoid, but I was wondering if anyone had this same issue. Heres a link to what I purchased on EBAY.
