This group is for discussing the basics of CBG building for newer builders - where to start, what to do, common pitfalls, tips and techniques.
Keep in mind that new builders can find other great informative articles on CBG building, as well as most of the parts you'll need, over at C. B. Gitty Crafter Supply!

Just high enough not to rub the fingerboard.
What scale length are you using? What strings? What tuning?
Could also be your slide type, slide playing/technique or where your placing the slide.
How high should the strings be above a fretless CBG. Whenever I use a slide I have problems getting clear notes.
CBB build? Come to the dark side. Haha
I was lent an old bass guitar today to see if the neck would possibly be any good for my resonator project, after very careful and hopeful inspection, I have to say that no, it is no good for me without seriously major surgery. Even after all the modification, it will still be a amended bass guitar neck... not knocking that, but, it could make a mutant cigar box long thing, but for my tastes, it is a no-no...... shame !!!
Sounds like some wonderful projects you have going.
As the Rolling Stones sang," what drag it is growing old".
Thank you Paul Craig, my sympathies with your complaint, it is age related with me, but it is awful a lot of the time. I actually got lumbered with performing in a place I used to play at years back, this last Thursday. Oh man, the humiliation of trying to play an open C on a conventional guitar. I sometimes suffer from a Benign Familial Tremor, a grand name for the shakes. Watching me eat Soup, or peas can be quite hilarious usually, that is if I do not tear my face off when cleaning my teeth.....!!!!
Ho hum, lifes rich tapestry..... I have several thinnish planks of Sapele to fashion the box part from, I had intended to make a Symphonie Hurdy Gurdy from them, but there is plenty for that later. The first job is this resonator, then a second one with conventional scale length to try out an experiment of mine..... I also have Berimbau nearly finished in Ash. A Brazilian percussion thing with a string, like a longbow pretty much....
The making is the thing with me, such a challenge with a hopefully playable end result... thank you for your information..
I also have Arthritis and Nerve Damage which is why most of my guitars have open tuning's to use 1 finger fretting or slide.
Sapele is an awesome wood to use for a neck or other parts.
There are a couple of magnetic pickups that work well for Resonators. Lipstick Tubes, DeArmond 2000 or similar Dynosonic, P90, Tele neck pickup, Mini-bucker and the Flatpups if you decide to go that route. The rod style piezo's are also great.
Well I have been furiously investigating all manner of stuff today, National do a baritone resonator with a 27" scale neck, that is my starting block, then apparently they have the 13th fret abutting the bodywork, different I thought, normally 12th or 14th fret. The one I saw a picture of is a wooden bodied version, so nothing is impossible. Not being that conversant with curvy woodwork, I am picturing a sort of weird triangular shape body. I will manufacture the neck from a single lumpette of wood, possibly Sapele, because I think I know where I can score a bit of it. The headstock may have to be a different bit glued on somehow. I am working on the theory that non-electric is the way to go, but the option is open ATM. Action will be on the higher side of minimal for slide usage, although frets will be delineated, especially the important ones. I prefer not to have fretwork in place as it is un-needed because of the Arthritis in the fingers.... if you good people are anything like me, you should be quite excited by now. The decrepit guitar in my avatar was a half decent but cheap thing that morphed into my first CBG. That was successful, where it is now is anybodies guess, I often tend to give them away like walking sticks I have made....!!!!! The pleasure is in the making for me, plus a bit of playing...!!!! Thanks for your interest, all of you.....
I agree with Paul. Take the time and spend that bit more (truss rod) to make sure you get a return on the time you invest by being able to play it for years to come. I have a spare truss rod too actually (for a standard scale length) so I'll include that in the package on Monday just incase you can use it. It's just sitting around doing nothing anyway.
I'm beginning to wonder if this resonator cone will withstand the string pressure but no harm in trying I guess. It's a 6" cone anyway so if the cone implodes and you build your box with enough space, whilst considering where you're going to brace your neck or have a deep set neck through, you can insert lots of cat bowls in the place of the imploded cone. If!
Either way I'm looking forward to seeing the end results of your build. Excited even!!
Reg, use a trussrod. Sure you can slap it together and might get lucky that the neck doesn't ramp on you or the box doesn't fold up, but why take the chance?
Anything worth doing is worth doing right - the first time. IMO
