Brass or Aluminum rod works well, too. You can find it in hobby or hardware stores.

My favorite for side dots is simply to use a piece of solid heavy gage copper wire (at least #12) - it files off easily for a flat/smooth/flush marker and really looks good when finished.  Drill a hole of the right diameter, doesn't need to be any deeper than 1/4" (can be less)

There's a guy on another forum I frequent that uses plastic dart tips as side dot fret markers. Come in various colors and are relatively inexpensive.

I've been looking for fret marker dots & discovered this. Plastic Golf tees. They are solid & tapered so just drill a hole, drive into hole & cut off level with the fret board. Glue in if you like. Level with a razor blade. Many colors to chose from. I use white. Works for my first CBG.
