Do you really need the sound hole(s). Trufully, I dont think I would take the chance on cardboard. If I was really just had to, I would use an xacto/razor knife and a lot of time and patience.
I always use a hole saw with a 1/4" drill bit center. I slowly drill 1/2 way through, then flip it over and finish drilling from the other side. This keeps it from blowing out on the inside of the lid.
I agree - you have to be careful on paper/cardboard. Like Mr McCauley, I like to slowly run the bit backwards to work through the top layer without tearing it, using either a Forstner bit or a hole saw. I'm paranoid enough that sometimes I'll even trace over it with an X-acto or carpet knife before going back at it with the hole saw or bit. Please also take Duck's advice & use a solid backing board. Take your time with it & use light pressure, whether turning the bit backwards or forwards and you can end up with a nice clean hole. If you really bugger up the edge, you can probably find a grommet or some other sort of trim ring to dress up the final product so you don't have to scrap the box.
The last one I built I turned the forester bit backwards to cut the paper then did the drilling at slowest speed. You may want to try this method with a hole saw also. I have also cut the top off the box to make the drilling operation easier and more accurate.
Hole saw.
I have used forstner bits and hole saws in a drill press with good results. Back up the lid with a piece of wood and use light feed pressure at a medium rpm.
I have make a few glass slide for my cbg...How a bout wooden or bone slide....What the best way to make 1?
I've been using 3/32" brass rod. That's the smallest drill my drill press will hold. At that size, I can clip it off with the same nippers I use for frets. I set it in with glue and then after the glue has dried, I gently sand it down level with a belt sander.
I was just using it for side markers. The last couple I built, I also used it for the markers on the face of the fret board.
I use plastic bread ties..comes in all sorts of colors. I punch them out with a paper punch, then I 'flattened" the tip of the appropriate drill bit, use a punch to mark the spot and drill cautiously, works pretty good for me. But looking at what all you guys use, I am now on the prowl for other materials to try out...THANKS GUYS! ps.. I flattened the tip of the drill bit to use as a forstner bit, goes ok too.
