One thing most folks to agree on is that if you have a slight gap between the lid and neck, the 'soundboard' can resonate more freely. I am definitely of that view. Remember it's only a matter of 1-2mm...

Thanks for taking time to answer these basic questions.

Using your screw through the back method, should the recess on the neck below the lid be just enough to accommodate the lid, making the two flush when closed, or should it be just slightly lower? I see evidence of both on here for that as well. I'd like to go ahead and trim that recess from the neck but I'm hesitant for the mentioned reasons.

Comment by Thomas "Duck" Petry on January 28, 2014 at 11:54am: Hi Billy...Here's how I do my neck layout for the tuners. The drawing gives a rough measurement for the hole position in relationship to the nut. As the picture shows I run all the strings to the same side of the neck as they wrap around the tuner peg and try to line them up so they run straight line to their position on the nut. You don't have to be dead on for the hole location, but this seems to work well for me.
