Wear a mask.  Walnut makes very fine dust that is irritating to most and topic to some.  Other that that, work slowly, a mistake that will scratch maple or oak will gouge walnut...unless it repurposed ols growth, then it can get brittle.

Hey there, Belfast Guy. Walnut is great for necks. I use it very often. Walnut is one of my favorite hardwoods for necks. It works and shapes very easily. The tighter the grain, the better.

I have a piece of well seasoned walnut also and I have the same question.  I also have some maple which I know works for necks.

I have been given a plank of walnut for making necks. Anyone used it? Anything I need to know?

Thanks Steve for sharing the steps of building, there is always great for us new builders, and even when you think you have it all covered.

I posted this article up as a blog, here is the link as it is the building process of a simple guitar from start to finish and of interest to beginners just starting out or those researching different building techniques...

I drilled holes for my strings planning to use pegs to hold them in but this didn't work at all. I then came up with the idea to curve the holes out side of the guitar. I then cut a piece of hardwood dowl, drilled small holes in it and ran the strings through the dowl, the the holes and on. This has worked great. This shows the dowl before I painted it
