Hi Paul welcome to the mill
I like 3 mm @ th 12 fret its good for fingering and slide playing :)
William,
I really like your idea and I have a diamond (stone) . I'll try that next time, although the safe file works ok too.
I have used small diamond sharpening stones to do this.. they are not real expensive at the big box store..
Thanks for all the tips. I was marring the side of the fret board with my file and still wasn’t happy with the results. I’ll make a 30 degree file block and I ordered the fret end file. No easy way around it, gotta work each fret.
This might be a help. http://www.stewmac.com/Luthier_Tools/Types_of_Tools/Files/Fret_End_...
That "safe file" method gary describes is the preferred way of dressing the ends. Another way is to mask the fret board around the fret with tape, wrap a piece of 1000g sandpaper around a small, rectangular rubber eraser. Sand any sharp edges and smooth out the bevel too. Lotsa tape required, though. Another useful tool: those foam emery boards sitting next to your wife's nail polish are great for dressing frets and shaping nuts & saddles.
Shart fret ends:
Here is what I have found. I have gotten complaints from people playing my guitars about sharp fret ends.
I talked to an old luthier about it. He gave me his fix.
After trimming and filing the fret ends and filing the bevel, you take a small file which you have previously sanded one side smooth. Looking down at the frets, you have to round the corners slightly. Both corners, both ends. The smooth face of the file can contact the fretboard without causing any damage. When you make your stroke, roll the file a little so you also take the sharp edge off the top of the fret. The file with one smooth edge is called a "safe file". It takes a bit of practice to get the strokes right.
You can always mortgage the house and buy one http://www.stewmac.com/Luthier_Tools/Tools_by_Job/Fretting/Shaping_... or just copy the design and build your own.
