Just finished my first actual CBG.
I made a copper slide for it too: I like the sound when I get it "clean" enough.
The action is really to high for the kind of playing I thought I would be doing (mixing slide with some fingerstyle).

I don't think I'll use the cheaper-wood Punch box again: it was much harder
to work with than the Flor de Jalapa box I used for the Doodle Bass. I also think that I won't use the 1/4" bolt for the nut next time, but rather carve something (so I can control the height).

I prefer I-V tuning on a two string, so that you can mimic power chords, shuffling blues lines etc.... On my page http://www.cigarboxnation.com/profile/WichitaSam check out "God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman" on the jukebox... #8.... You'll see what I mean.

Try it both ways...

No such thng as "proper" here. There are no rules on how you make them.
I belong to a "real" guitar building site, and they nit pic like crazy, and critique everything you do. I dont dare tell them I build cigar box guitars also.

I've managed to get hold of a couple of boxes now so am going to begin my first 'proper' build(s).
From reading the forums it seems that 3 strings are most popular, with 4 or 6 coming next. But.. I was thinking of making the first as a 2 string, with strings tuned to the octave: one as a bass drone, the other to twiddle on (though the bass could be twiddled on too of course!)
Has anyone done this? Any ideas? Is there an argument for tuning I-V instead?

Flat toothpicks are fine, but you have to sort out the best ones. But I had better results with the round ones. They are made of harder wood, it seems. I sawed in a shallow slot and glued in round toothpicks. Then I sanded them flat on the top surface. This took a bit of fussing to be sure they were all level, but worked great. You can sand the toothpicks to make your frets as tall or as short as you like.

I am going to be doing my first c.b.g. with frets. I have heard about using the flat toothpicks, does anyone know if that is a effective way to do it? Money is tight and it seems cost effective. Also I would like to take the paper off of a wooden box any suggestions on how to do that easily?
