I think Eric is right, gluing the heel just transfers the force to the box, which is not made to be strong and might not hold up that well. Reinforcing the thin neck extension looks safest.

Dianne I dont think gluing the heel is the answer here. From what I can tell the wood that goes through the box red oak or not appears to be to thin to withstand the string tension. Also there is limited room in the box. It looks as though you could get a piece of hard wood under the neck inside the box. Also try using a light string to ease some of the extra tension.

Dianne, what occurs to me to try is to make the through-the-body portion into an I-beam. If the existing piece is like this:
----
Then glue two strips, one on each side, so that they are like
|----|
It makes a much stronger form that way. You would probably best run them all the way from the heel to the tail, cutting slots for them in the lid. They could either be an I beam or a U beam, like:
|____|
I had a similar problem and ended up using aluminum L shaped strips. Ugly, but inside, and very flex resistant.
let me know if this makes no sense, I'll post a sketch.
On the other hand, I think the threaded rod would work since it would be under tension, not compression, if I understand what you are considering. Round metal rods bend rather easily when compressed but stand up well to tension. A rod would also leave more room for air to move about than the I beam approach, but would be harder to fashion.

my last 8 foot section of 1x2 maple got rained on for about 20 minutes. Will the water get into the wood enough to make it scrap, or can I use it safely, maybe for uses other than necks? I'm worried about warping, of course. I don't want to wait until I can replace it if not necessary.

W.Sam, great answer as always. Kicking myself here as I do that to sharpen chisels. I got this 6" "fingerboard leveler file" from stewmac when I meant to order the fret leveler file (just different file pattern) and it left me wondering how anyone could know where to file. Your answer: you don't, you sand the whole thing until level.
I was just offered a large slab of fine marble, now I know what to do with it - very very flat surface.

Diane, if you think gluing the heel would stop the bowing, then do it.
The electronics aren't active, why do you need access to them?

Ben, my pics are on my page. Please see what you think. The cbg is sitting on the white chair---that is the cbg I have a problem. Thank you for your help.

Diane - can you post some pics? Would help us formulate a more effective response. Need pics of the neck inside the box, the outside from the back, and the side where the neck goes through.

To anyone out there. I thought I finished a cbg when I noticed I had a problem after I tightened the strings. The neck is bowing bad when the string tension is on. I was afraid this would happen being I couldn't attach the heel to the box because I wanted the box to open. I made the back of the box the front. If I glued the heel to the box, I wouldn't be able to open the box to access the electronics. I have a theory to drill a hole through the heel and box and run a 1/4 inch steel threaded rod through the heel and the inside of the box. If I screw nuts on each end, then I could have access to the inside of the box. But is the steel rod going to keep the neck from bowing? The neck is made out of red oak. The part inside the box bows bad when the tension is on. Is there anyone out there that can give me some advice that might solve my problem?
I don't have much room on the side of the lid to drill any bigger than a 1/4 of inch hole. Or maybe just a strip of wood glued the neck inside the box, drilling a hole on each end of the box, and screwing a screw in the wood. I would have access, then. Thanks for your help. Confused and worried!!!!
