Fitzhugh, instead of a wedge attached to the heel inside, how bout a piece of wood the width of the neck attached to the heel between the two pieces of wood of each side. Wouldn't that work? Thank you for all your help. I am glad I haven't cut the pieces of wood yet. I am going to do the I beam .

Rand, nice drawing. Nice idea, but I had rather not let it show on the outside. Thank you very much for your help.

Rand, how did you post photo on comment?

Rand, thanks for clarifying what I meant in addition to adding your experience. I didn't explain why an I beam is a good choice, but think about sky scrapers: I beams all over the place. They are nearly as stiff as a solid piece of same outside dimensions but with much less material involved, less weight, etc. In my version I left a huge weak spot at the spaces near the heel, Rand addresses that. Rand, you might have a sense of whether it would work to just have the added strips on top (bottom really) and attach to the back of the heel instead of the outside? With fillets (right word?) in the corners it might be strong enough, and adding another block in the middle to further anchor the heel would help yet more. This is instead of having them attached to the edge of the neck portion in the box or having them stick out as you suggested. It would make a U beam, also very strong. No idea how to add a photo here, so I'll post it again to my photo page.

Hi Again, Diane Woods. I just modified Futzhugh's drawing to clarify what I was saying. Here it is:

Hi Diane Woods.

I looked at Futzhugh's drawing and it appears to me that the top and bottom parts of the "I beam" must be extended through your box and up the neck at least a couple of inches. You might be able to tie it into your existing heel some way. I had a similar problem with one of my builds which I was trying to make as a bolt on neck so I could maximize the interior space of the box. Unfortunately, when I tuned the instrument, the neck under the pressure of the strings caused it to bow in the same way yours is doing. I fixed that by adding a triangular cut of wood (effectively a heel) and bolting that on with a few wood screws. It worked, but looks a bit ugly. In your case, given the kind of cigar box you are using, this kind of fix would mean having to seal the box. However, I think Fitzhughs idea of converting your neck into an I beam is a good alternative, only that it would have to pass through the cigar box and go up the neck a few inches to be most effective. Good luck with you build.

-Rand.

Thanks Fitzhugh. That is a good idea. Thank you again for all the advice.

Dianne, no trouble, we all come here to ask questions. How about just a strip of wood down the center of the neck inside the box? A glue joint between the end of the strip and the back of the heel could be reinforced with a block of wood on each side to increase the surface area that's glued. It would require a notch in the box, but the notch would be hidden by the heel.
