I just use a metal square and run the woodburning tool against it, works fine.

Hey PapaSimone, that was a great idea cutting the lines first before woodburning. I should have done that, because I have crooked lines burnt on the neck. Yours turned out neat.

PaPaS,

I'm a (maybe) better marketer than a builder.... you are welcome to PaPaS.  The solution you've come up with is really nice... and, you can do the hot bolt head too...They'll work well together...

Hey Witchita,

Thanks for the advice.  PapaSimone spelled the way you did would actually make a nice brand. PaPaS (also it means potatoes in Spanish, or multiple popes...what's not to like!) Anyhow, I want to try your branding technique but here is a pic of how I solved my problem.  Evidently I couldn't wait a whole hour to get your advice.  I first sawed thin lines and then used those to wood burn my lines.  Actually turned out pretty well...

PaPaS,

If you have a butane (soldering) torch, you can use something like a small bolt, heat up the head and use it like you would a branding iron... hex head,  round allen's head, big pan head screws all work good, lend a unique, presentable arts and crafts look....

I learned this trick from Darren Duke at Back Porch MoJo.

Hi all,

I am making a fingerboard for a fretless guitar.  How do people make the fret lines.  Woodburning?  So far my woodburning looks amatuer and like lots of dots instead of lines.  If can figure out the woodburning I may just put dots at the top of the fingerboard.

Help.

Yeah, even with some more information its probably going to come down to some trial and error.

I suggest some time studying some of the pictures here, and some experimentation.

small at nut ,  bigger at the bridge.... (sorry, not being a smart-axx, but there's so many variables that the best thing to do is go to the local hardware store, buy a variety of sizes and play with it.)  little things like your playing preference, fret size (if you're using frets at all) neck angle, and other construction criteria make it impossible to answer your question with any precision....
