Hey folks, I'm in the process of making my first biscuit/cookie tin guitar, to which I'm intending to add a pickup. I've just thought, am I going to have problems with the jack socket being in contact with the tin and causing shorting?

Is the socket already insulated against this or do you think I'll need to insulate it myself? Your advice would be much appreciated oh Nation of the Cigar Box.

Anyone have some advice on dot inlays that you can make form things at home depot or walley world or things around the house?

Hey folks, you know one of the questions I hear the most from new builders is what strings they should use on their new build, or how they should tune it. There is a newly revised/updated article on this very subject over at www.cbgitty.com, which goes into depth on this very topic. Here is the link:

If you are unsure what strings to use, or how to tune your cbg, then check it out!

Hi Bill Harbour

Some people prefer finishing the neck before they add the frets, and some do it after they fret the necks. I sometimes do a couple of coats before I fret and another after I fret. If you fret after you finish, you will want to protect your finish with blue tape when you are doing your fret job. If you are applying finish after you add you frets, you will want to either spray on the finish, or use a non-streaking applicator such an one of those sponge brushes. With softer woods, a coat or two of polyurethane helps to stiffen up the wood so the frets can be held in better, and a coat afterwards helps to "glue in" the frets, but you need to try different techniques to see what works best for you given the material and techniques you like to use. I forgot to mention, so people prefer to oil their necks rather than to finish with poluyurethane, and that's fine too.

I'm starting my second build and have a question.  On my first build, I didn't apply a finish to the neck.  I fretted it and sanded of course, but no finish.  I'd like to apply a finish to this second neck.  My question is this, do I apply the finish before or after I fret it...or does it matter?

Thanks,

Well, maybe the school of not-so-hard-knocks thanks to Cigar Box Nation.

Gustavo,

Truth be known, I didn't come from any school as far as music goes ;-)
