This group is for discussing the basics of CBG building for newer builders - where to start, what to do, common pitfalls, tips and techniques.
Keep in mind that new builders can find other great informative articles on CBG building, as well as most of the parts you'll need, over at C. B. Gitty Crafter Supply!

4 for a buck! Now that's a deal. Wish I had on of those surplus stores around here.
The drain traps should work great, & will look sharp with nickel or chrome hardware. I just picked up a bunch of them myself (both types, various sizes) 4-for-a-dollar at the surplus/salvage store.
Lots of folks use them....those look like nice ones. Where to you get them?
Alice,
there is no "best" piezo or pickup. . . It all depends on your use/desired sound and your budget. I have build a lot of both and tend of gravitate toward cheap piezo discs (drum triggers) on economy builds or instruments that I was a "raw" sound. I tend toward wound pups on instruments and need strength and stability. I really like massive humbuckers in my performance CBGs.
the best,
Greetings From New Port Richey, FL
Still have not started my CBG yet because I still have a few questions. My question today is: From your vast experience, what is the best piezo or pickup you would recommend. I have been looking at the Panama Red Dual Piezo, bridge and pickup at C.B.Gitty. Also, the All-in-one 4-string Bridge,Pickup and Tailpiece also from C.B. Gitty. Surely, some of you have tried many things, and I'm counting on your experience. Frustrated in Florida!
Hi i am looking for some guidance. I just built a 3 string CBG, and in showing it to a few coworkers and kids I work with, we are thinking of making several together as an activity. I work for a county agency that helps keep kids in their family home instead of foster/group homes. I have access to some budget, some woodworking skills/tools, and very limited playing ability! and enthusiasm to learn. Any recommendations on supplies, instructions, on line or purchase lessons would be greatly appreciated. I am doing a lot of searching, but why re invent the wheel. Looking at @ 6 or so to build.
That's a good idea about the fret. I have no fret material laying around. I also thought of using maybe some small diameter brass tubing cut to length and shoved through the block of wood at the three holes. Since the wood block is glued in place it's important that I keep an eye on things. The shape of the block is such that one edge of it is right up against the 3 holes for the strings too, so the wear started right away.
If I decide to try my hand at making a CBG, I'll really plan this part out. I've seen some makers use those old style half round cupboard handles with holes drilled to thread the strings through.
Well, this morning I pulled off each string one by one and grabbed my pop rivet kit. I found that the smallest rivets with the "nail" removed were the right size to push into the bottom of the wood block used on my CBG to hold the strings. The block isn't flat on the bottom, but is cut on a taper, so the holes are not nice and neat, but the flange shaped pop rivet flange gives it a decent and flat surface to hole the string end with the ball on it. I'll keep an eye on this area. On the top side of the wood block the builder used apparently white plastic inserts. These are showing some wear in the plastic also. I may replace these too with the pop rivet heads.
I can see that how one designs the method to hold and retain the strings deserves some real thought, as guitar strings can easily wear through wood. I worked on freight hauling trucks for some 24 years, and saw casesMyer where those plastic tie wraps wore through solid steel over time and due to vibrations. This on a patch job done by the truck owner.
Thanks to Oscar Myer for the pop rivet tip.
