on fretless, I don't care when the position markers are on the top of the neck, but on the side where I can see while playing, I like the markers on the position where the fret would have been.

Thanks Thomas - I suppose it would suit me to have them on the fret but may confuse another player. Great beard by the way!

Howling Dick...I'd say put them where you like them, though I would lean towards conventional locations as that is what you work off of. "There are no rules".

So Im just finishing a new fretless neck with just dots (3/5/7/9/12/15) i.e no fret markings (I usually brand them). D'ya reckon I should position them conventionally or actually where the fret mark should be?

Arthur the A string is .042 D String is .032 G string is .025 good luck

.042 (A-string tuned to G), .032 (D string tuned to D), .025 (G string tuned to G)

OK here is my dumb ass question.  I am building my first fretted 3 string CBG.  I want to use the strings A D &G and tune it to open G.  I bought a package of strings that has 6 strings but the envelopes that have the strings do not indicate A D G etc.  Rather the envelopes indicate .053, .042, .032, .025, .016 & .012.

So which ones do I use?
