Is it a bird, is it a plane? no its Wichita Sam to the rescue. Gonna use the half way point. Thanks Sam. HD
I wanted some 5 mm hardwood for my fret boards but none available off the shelf. The timber I chose was Kwila / Merbau. Hardness rating HARD (The Australian Timber Database) Available DAR at Bunnings (140 mm X 22mm ). I found a business at North Arm just outside Eumundi Queensland who would size it for me (2 x 2.4 metre $15. ) His main business is preparing slabs of mainly native hardwoods for bush furniture, breadboards etc. He sized for me to 5mm a piece of Camphor Laurel (a weed) about 2 foot square to make a sound board. I think he could size below 5 mm. I am getting timber there in the rough but with the natural grain of the timber to follow the line of the neck and a offset head.
HD,
The scale is from the point where the free vibrating string contacts the nut and the bridge... On a bolt, that is approximately the center of the diameter of the bolt....
This is only significant on larger bolts. (I have seen bolts as big is 1/2" used, but I wouldn't advise it.)
the best,
Sam
Im using a bolt as a nut. wondering if I position my fret scale from half way accross the bolt or to the edge of the neck as I usually do?
then polish
I tend to use Polycrylic by minwax. Its a water based urethane that does not change the color. Fast drying and about 3 coats and rub out with 0000 steel wool you get a great finish. I use oil based urethane when I want that amber color change. Much longer drying times. For oil finish try mixing the last coat with some butchers wax, the polish.
HD,
You humble me....
the best,
Sam
Who am I to argue with Wichita Sam? - that tips the balance and the way Im going to go . Thanks Sam
