Merry Christmas everyone. Just finished building my first CBG recently and I have a question about the nut location when using a threaded bolt. I use a CNC router to make my fretboard and mark the fret locations by using a 1/4" 60 degree v-bit to etch a line so I know exactly where to cut my fret slots with my fret saw. If I want to use a bolt or threaded rod for a nut where do you measure from. Do you use the centerline of the rod/bolt where the strings would be making contact? Thanks in advance for all your help.20121224_191931.jpg
Hi Troy, I built one using a Partagas Gigante box that was fairly large and it sounds great.
If you want something bigger than a cigar box, you might want to look at various drawers from desks, cabinets, or dressers. Of course it's not a cigar box, but they could work.
hey troy ,, consider a double wine box .
I'm looking to build a cbg with a bigger cigar box. Can anyone tell me what the names of some of the larger cigar boxes are? Thanks
jamie, you can have perfect intonation, if... you play slide perfectly... otherwise, the higher the strings from the fretboard, the harder it is to get the intonation right....
Thomas, I didn't see that thickness measurement, you could ( and are probably) right that this is the cause of the flexing neck....
jamie bark, I think some of your problem may be the thickness of your neck. It seems the standard is to use a 1X2 board for the neck and the board actually measures 3/4" thick by 1 1/2" wide. Add a 1/4" thick fingerboard/fretboard and the neck will measure 1" thick by 1 1/2" wide. If you are using a piece 1/2" thick even with the added 1/4" fretboard that may explain the flex.
hey guys I am starting my first build and have been told to use the top for the bottom and the bottom for the top. I want to start gathering stuff to start the build and know I need to get wood for the neck to make the measurement for the box so I will be asking tons of questions
Jamie, just a thought, that oak board could have an internal split running lengthwise. I bought one like that at Lowe's one time. I found when I started sawing the board.
Thanks Sam- I think lowering the action was the best fix on this one- playing good now and keeping tune. Even with a 1/4" fretboard glued to the 1/2" oak I can flex the neck pretty easily to get a cool wha wha going. This piece of oak seems weaker to me-it flexes easy even though the grain is going the right way too. I guess I am working thru a few building ideas and seeing what will happen if... Is it possible to have a higher action and still keep intonation? Seems to be an either/ or type of endevor. I do want to start getting more elaborate on my bridges too, instead of just using a bolt, so that will spur more questions I'm sure.
