I wondered what you were up to. I like the saddle/bridge, did you echo the same wood on the headstock? Do you have a headstock photo? Even better is the spray painted plywood; now THAT looks like a spectacular top board for the reso you are building ; right? Im struggling with a tin lid reso. How to combine the tin lid bridge piezo, to a pre-fab neck humbucker ( Gitty) Im using your idea of contrasting wood "ears" on both the tail and headstock, As always; looking forward to all your projects. Thanks
It is a duet jam, but you can hear the uke :)
Cynthia,
A cat bowl reso works good on a uke without neck-thru-body design. If it is a neck thru git or uke, the neck inside the box will have to be modified extensively to provide clearance for the bowl. That is my 25c worth.
the top shows the bolivian rosewood head with an inlaid Australian 2 pence from 1968. the year my nephew was born. second photo is the 3rd build in thought. possible cat bowl or tin lid reso. The 3rd photo is the second build. Sound hole is too low, but it has to be there; my nephews name is Max. The plastic 20 deg. ellipse was used as template for hole. Dremel used to cut. and a Diesel box for the 9 volt amp, as there will be dual piezo's in parallel. After the tung oil dries, finished photos to follow. My next builds will be done with better acoustics in mind, Any advice on what a reso build needs will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Cynthia- How is build #2 going? BTW, I did like the idea of the oval sound hole. How did you do it?
I also thought a little more about sound hole placement for visual effect. I built 4 of these "tall ship" ukes with the sound hole near the center, to make the box design look similar to a rosette.. Not perfect acoustically, but I liked the look.
Today, I fretted 2 ukes and got them playing ok, but not complete yet.
Cynthia,
You mean contrasting light/dark on the headstock ears? I have fun with these and I don't get overwhelmed with the accuracy of my cuts, etc. Just pieces of scrap glued on. I don't trim them until after they are glued, then I sand them down as I am sanding the headstock.. Also I don't trim the end of the headstock until after the tuners are in and it is strung up. It is one of the last things I do. I get a better idea of how long aI want it after the tuners are in.
A critical thing is to leave enough space for your fingers when playing on the first fret. That is accomplished by having a long taper on the ears and also not going all the way to the nut with the ears. I have posted photos about that about a year ago.
I am hardly the uke guru. I have built 10 now and have gotten some good advice from Will King of Sacramento. But I keep plugging away on my sailboat workshop.
Notice the interesting grain effect where I sanded through the glue joint. I won't try to hide that. I think it is a nice feature.
Very grateful for the advice. The soundhole was cut to center on the inside art. Doh. Next build underway, but only glued the neck block. Caught this error just in time. Always wondered if the extra wood that came with the box could be used. Great tip. The bridge block was there for a different screw in bridge, which was too high. I cut it in half, used part for the string tail, and made a thin saddle out of Nicaraugua Mahogany. The bridge bolt was ground flat to a .028 height. That gave enough break from the tail. no buzz, and lowered string action alot. I study your work, so next try is to glue a contrating wood head stock. Also searching for a good size box for a tin lid reso. Love your photos and ideas
