Hi all!  I'm working on my second uke right now using a reclaimed First Act neck.  Anyone know what the wood they use is?  Doesn't seem very hard, is taking a lot of sealer.  Basswood perhaps?  Also, I'm redoing the fretboard.  Do most peolpe use the narrow/low gauge frets?  The fretboard is 1/8" cocobolo.

after I'm done with this one, of course

Shelley, did you actually tie the tie wraps on that gorgeous uke or did you just attach them somehow? I'm thinking of doing my next uke with tie wraps. :)

What glue did you use, Jon? Wood or super glue, or what?

ditto on everthing...I use threaded rod, cut to length and install threaded barrel inserts into the heal.  I am using 1/4-20 and brass inserts..sometimes I go up a size..I made a install tool so they don't go in crooked, just a piece of threaded rod with a couple of nuts jammed together.  this lets me use a wrench instead of a screwdriver to install the inserts..enjoy..I find 2 enough.  Good advice on adding a piece of wood to reinforce the side of the box.  you can get about 1/8 inch action higher due to the bow in the side when you tension the strings.  Again about 1/4 thick the full width of the side and attached to the bottom and long edges works for me...enjoy@

Oh I see. Yeah, Aquilas sound best to my ears, although worths are pretty good too. But you should experiment with Kala reds, Martin flourocarbon, all sorts of them, to get the best sound for your particular uke. Not all strings are created equal, nor are they all the smae for every uke!

They are Tempo Strings...A brand I have for my Charango I play. the two instruments are tuned the same but the Charango has double GG,CC,Ee,AA,EE, so I just used those strings to see what kind of sound it would make. I'm going to order a set of Aquilas Uke Strings for my 2nd build im doing now. I cant wait to hear what it sounds like !

What kind of strings did you use, Loco? Those look like Brown Worth strings, but could be ghs or something like that. If they aren't Worths or Aquilas, I highly recommend you put one of those two brands on there. Aquilas are bright and loud and can make even a plastic toy sound better!

It can help to glue up an extra piece of material on the bottom of the neck where it attaches to the box (technically called a heel I think) so you have a wider footprint for the attachment - but that's about it.

Lots of acoustic and classic guitars and ukes use this type of attachment - and lots of professional uke's I've seen skip the screws and just glue it all together.
