Scott: The dulcimer I built has a three piece neck so that the center (channel) is hollow. And, I made two small surface cuts on the end so that it could vibrate more freely. But, as I said earlier, I am always learning! Peace, Chaplain Will
I put classical guitar nylon strings on my granddaughter's what I call banjo/uke and hook it up to a microcube amp and it sounds fantastic. Reason for nylon is the metal strings would hurt their little fingers.
My question exactly - I'm interested in knowing that as well.
Great timing on this thread as I am about to start making my first uke from a tin box. It seems to me that it might be important for the top of the tin box to be free to vibrate in order to get the best sound projection. Is it good practice to keep a small space between the neck and the front surface of the tin?
Another quick question, If I may please. Do you think having the lid sitting directly on the neck hurts the sound? I always leave a gap (1/8") when I build with a box - so the lid doesn't make contact along the length inside the box. Thanks again! C.W.
Those tin Ukes are just way cool! How do they sound in comparison to a cigar box uke? I know there are many variables, so, just in general. Thanks in advance. Beautiful work! Chaplain Will
Titch: I use the same method on square ones. This site is great for exploring different methods.
Stringybark: Thanks. Sometimes I use door moulding if I miscut around the sides and bottom of neck. You can see a piece of that showing.Yes, the screw is for the strap.
