Hey folks. Thinking of building a CBG bass and I have a question or 2. Does it matter what kind of magnetic pickup I put in it? I mean is there one specific for basses? Also, does the 3 or 4…Continue

Hi Steve. I've been playing with the Sleaford Ukulele Orchestra for some years now. If you are interested there is some stuff that you can find on Google, Prior to that I played in blues bands and going back far too many years than I care to remember, heavy metal, progressive rock bands. Good luck with the construction and keep us all posted
What ukulele orchestra do you play with? My venture into bass ukulele is driven by need for our small group--I have been playing ukulele for less than a year so am 'musically challenged' as far as theory is concerned--may be an advantage for the project I am doing...Have the cigar box, wood for neck, some tuners off an old bass guitar (but they look huge) piezo with bits for vol and tone control and just ordered some strings for u-bass. Guess I just need to put it all together then start to learn how to play a cbbass-uke! Thanks for you help.
There is no reason why you can't build a 3 string bass. I doubt that the sound of the 3 strings will be much different from a 4 string bass and you could get away with a narrower neck. As you say, 'something different' and a challenge to the little grey cells.
As a bass player with a ukulele orchestra and a bass player of 40 odd years I still prefer 4 strings as I know what I have [notes and strings] and where they are. You, having never played bass, might be just as happy with 3 strings.
Hi Yellowbelly- -thanks! I was also thinking if it is possible--or at least playable--to build a 3 string bass --I am thinking of similar 20inch scale to the Kala with Aquila Thundergut strings--this would allow me to use a slightly thinner neck as well but am not sure if three strings would compromise the sound too much for playing with Uke group--by the way I have never played bass as you can probably guess by all the questions--the idea of 'something different ' really appeals to me though and I like a challenge...
well, the Kala U-bass that I have just measured has a neck width of 45 mm at the zero fret. I have used slightly thinner [in width] necks for a ukulele bass but 45 mm seems to be good for me. The one I have is fre less and offers a great sound through a bass amp. The Kala is fitted with 4 individual pick ups but I have built one with an under saddle piezo that sounded really good.
The Kala is as near as silent as an acoustic instrument.
Hi-I'm a newbie to cbg but would like to build a cbg bass using the Kala U-bass type strings or Aquila Thudergut strings- (for playing with a ukulele group in fact--I was wondering if anyone had recommendation for neck width to accommodate the thick strings--also any other advice generally or point me in the right direction--Thanks--was really pleased when I was directed to this group...
Hi Jamie, my first bass is a 2string and no truss rod with fret board laminated to it, it did not bend. I used the 2 middle strings from a bass set tuned to G C the thickest is top string tuned to G. I used a rod piezo set in the bridge and it works well. Do you have a joiners workshop near you? Explain what you are making and they are usually very helpful. I shall be doing this next time. I'm learning blues on mine. I hope I've been some help. 'fingers'
Planning my 1st bass build. For the neck I have a Walnut 1x2 and 1/4" oak fretboard laminated to it. No router, so no truss rod... thinking of just going with 2 strings. Haven't decided which out of the set. Probably the D & G. Hoping a standard piezo will work. I do have a rod piezo with a preamp I could use too, but hoping to put that in a 4 string guitar I am making. Depending on the box I use, I may also laminate another section of 1/4" oak to the neck inside the box to help with the tension issues. Walnut & oak should be plenty strong right?
Thanks Chris! I'll check it out. I liked Treat Her Right, but the minimalist vibe of Morphine really hit me hard!
BIG +1 to Morphine and Mark Sandman. There's a CD box set of his stuff called Sandbox and it's great
