Hey folks. Thinking of building a CBG bass and I have a question or 2. Does it matter what kind of magnetic pickup I put in it? I mean is there one specific for basses? Also, does the 3 or 4…Continue

Jamie mate, fretless bass, fretted bass, jumbo or whatever? What's the worry mate. Do it now and solve the real problems out later, adjustable bridge is a good investment or a nut to suit, have confidence in yourself, you can do it man. Just get the spacing right and you have cracked it, if not do the fretless bass a renound and honoured timeless bass of beauty. He who dares Jamie, let me know how it goes then we can sort the problems later, why jump imaginary fences? Hope that gives you a bit of confidence, every git you make will have it's own glitches as all the guys and gals here know, go for it,best of luck. Chris. :)
thanks ek- I don't fully understand the mechanics of it but may go ahead with the medium...
Shouldn't make a critical difference as long as the frets are positioned correctly. Having jumbo frets would probably make it gentler on your fingers however. It's easier to properly fret a note on a heavy string with bigger fretwire on the neck. Because the fret height is higher with a jumbo, the action can be set lower without buzzing.
That said, there are some high-end and boutique basses that use smaller fretwire with good effect. Only way to really see how well it would work for what you have is to try it.
will medium/medium fret wire work on a bass? Compared it to the frets on my Carvin Bass and they are bigger. Hope it will work so I can fret the neck, but I'll order some jumbo fret wire if I need to.
http://youtu.be/pdGrYGOMdRk Here is some sound from mine. As you say, the tuners heads are really busy. I had to cut the strings many times. I tried to buy ashbory tuner heads but could order any. Seem to be impossible from France So I took normal bass tuner heads. I had to cut a bit the string in its lengh to adjust it. I can't give you any advice to learn because I'm not a bass player. I'm sure you will find videos in the music style you like. Your bass is really nice.
That was my first build --20inch , fretless, Aquila Thundergut strings--Actually sounds quite good! Need to widen back end to increase space between strings for more comfortable playing and highten bridge also fit string tree instead of bootlace at head . Didn't realise how big the bass stuners would be nor the strings so a bit crowded--All I have to do now is learn how to play a bass! Any recommended sites for beginnersbass playing?
Hi, I made a kind of double bass but the result is not great. First, I made it with acoustic bass strings as the double bass string are too expensive. The, the resonance doesn't develop enough volume to be able to play in a band in the streets....That's what I needed. So instead, I made the opposite, a kind of kala bass. I will buy an battery powered amp.
Cheers Yellowbelly--I'll look them up and I will keep you posted--I just hope I end up with something play!able and not just an expensive set of strings and a few bits of wood!
