yea, add a switch for some distortion

I need some dirty tones, so some distortion is necessary.

I'm working on a little amp that uses a CD4049UBE chip as a preamp into an LM380.  Right now, I've set the amp up to play mostly clean and it sounds very good.  Should I add switch to throw in another gate or two in the signal chain to add some distorted sounds??  Do you guys play mostly clean or do you need some distortion too?

Tnx,

im so happy ! i can move on now . i have tons of stuff to do ! i just wish i knew why the first four boards kept geekin out ? this thing is just too much fun , you can throw it together for under 10 bucks , heck even under 5 if you have some crap layin around . its like a chip a cap 2 resistors and a photocell . i couldnt recommend this thing any more . should have a video soon i ended up using an fmims3 design , its just a lil different then the first two layouts i tried .

I think you showed it to me already but what's the schematic for the thing again?

And that's a nice set up you got, if a bit small.  I'd show you my workbench but the landlord had new windows put in and I had to move everything three feet away from the windows (my workbench was, of course, right in front of a window.)  So if I showed you my workbench now it'd look like a table.  Nice and minimalistic, but not conducive to getting things done.

i tried breadboarding an oscillator with a lm386n chip today . the output was very quiet , when hooked up to a tiny 8 ohm speaker . anyone ever come up with a fun application for a lm 386n chip ? i have 2 now :( anyway i got a few more 555 oscillator schematics , a few from forest mimms . gonna try a 5th board for this thing . but first i think i have to retest the shit out of the cds cell , battery clip , and speaker that are in the chassis . i tested this stuff a bunch of times already and it comes up good . still cant figure out why the first 4 boards i put in this thing keep failing after a minute to 3 of use . maybe i need moar flux ? i got some transistor schemes , so i may see if i can round up some trannies out of scrap boards i have laying around . i guess ill just start gogling the numbers . i found this site , havnt tried it yet but :

http://octopart.com/

i need to figure out how to ID transistors from the number that is printed on the part . im curious if i will have better luck with a transistor oscillator . and also if they drain less power than say a 555 chip wired up for the same application (as an oscillator) .

after 4 failed 555 boards , a 386 version that was too quiet i am beginning to wonder what the heck is going on with this design . the prototype is fine , so is the breadboard versions i whipped up . everytime i solder it up on a lil pcb it works for a minute and quits .

getting really old , wish me luck .
