Hey all,
Just built my first cigar box amplifier with an MAH 5 amp harness. http://guitarfuel.com/MAH5_Amplifier_Harness.php
It works perfectly when running off the 9v battery, but I get a terrible hum when using an AC adapter. I have a fully regulated 12V 1amp center positive adapter like it recommends. I notice the LED shines a lot brighter when connected to the AC adapter as well.
Did some research and it looks like others have had this problem, but I have not yet found a fix? Anyone else have experience with this amp harness or maybe found an adapter that works?
Any ideas are welcome, would love to plug my amp into the wall :(
Will post some pics soon.
WARNING!! Input audio very low till :25, then axe comes in hard. Botched mix, channel with my mic & stomp box not properly mixed, still getting use to garage band. Experimenting with fretless 3 string tuned to GGD. Mid 50's R-3 Fisher amp & Jensen 15" H-510 coaxial speaker mounted in Kustom cab. Replaced original tubes with JJ's, output set at 1/5 volume.
Good points Eric on tubes & speaker, I can only assume the old time builder was referring to hot guitar amps Vs Hi-Fi stuff. I do believe this Fisher is a push-pull amp, which if I'm not mistaken is more efficient then a class A amp. 30w or 50w, this thing screams, & yes I will post a vid asap. I prefer to mic it & run it through garage band with no effects Vs a phone.
a good score lemon. particular output tubes give a good idea of output power. if a smoking hot deluxe reverb with 2 6V6's is putting out 22W, then a 'HIFI' amp with two sets is probably running closer to 30W total. that being said, speaker efficiency plays a big part in the output from valve amps, and that combo you have might just be guitar amp gold! gonna post some sound?
Your correct Jim, I was told a long time ago by a builder that you can take the chassis rating & divide by 4 to get an estimated output, so I'm estimating 50w output. I've heard 50w amps amps & their loud, but something about this amp & speaker combo that seems exceptional. The speaker is a 15" coaxial in a 2x15 cab (want a 2nd H-510 to fill cab) , so I assume some of the magic is in that old Jensen H-510. Just installed the new JJ's & giving it a mild burn in period. At moderate levels I notice a cleaner more distinct tone.
That 195W is likely the maximum AC power draw... Audio output power will be much less.
Hey Eric, chassis tag rates it at 195w, most likely around 50w. Just got new JJ's for the audio circuit & plan to fire up later today. 4-6V6S', 2-ECC83S, 12AV6, 5UG4. Was a screamer even with tired tubes through the Jensen 15" coaxial.
Blind Lemon, 195W??!!?? what are the power tubes, and how many are there?? Marshall didn't get 200w until '67, and fender with it's supertwin in the '70's - and neither of these are what you would call "200 HI-FI watts". what's it got init?
