Sliding is the nature of the beast with Titebond type glues. Plus the scarf joint is at an angle. You could put in some brads or staples to keep it from sliding. Get it aligned with the brads while dry first.

There may be some arrangement with clamping blocks that would be helpful.

I'm sure people here will be able to give you many ideas on how to solve this problem.

There is a how to on this subject in the free instrument plans section --> Smokehouse Guitars presents Advanced Course in Cigar Box Guitar Building and Design PART 5.

Place your glue on the section (it does not take much) , use a CC to spread the glue, let it stand for a moment (becomes tacky), then place the pieces together. You can use clamps to hold t in place. Also use braces on the sides and brace the head and tail of your neck, but make sure that you don`t glue the braces to your work (you might have glue that seeps out of the joint.

I know what you are talking about on the slipping, it can be a headache. Good luck with it.

There are a couple of ways you can do it. Check out this forum for a way of clamping the neck and head so they can't slide.

Another way is to nail a couple of small brad nails into one side of the joint, then cut off so that just a little protrudes. When you clamp together the nail will penetrate the other part of the joint and prevent sliding. Just make sure you put them where they won't be cut into when you do other things like cutting the head thickness down or drilling the tuner holes. Regards John D

I clamp the neck and the head to the table so that the marks line up (on a piece of wax paper to make ooze cleanup easier) and then clamp the two pieces together.

And I wait just a few minutes after spreading the glue nice and thin for it to tack up a bit.

Thanks, Douglas. It wouldn't have been such a headache normally, but I had already spent about 2 hours building my own mitre box for scarfing, and then cutting a neck in it. I was so frustrated with the sliding problem I gave up for the night and decided to take a whack at it tomorrow.

A,B,C and all the above. I use a few staples from a staple gun and cut them so I have small 'pins' to hold the scarf on. I place them on an area where they won't poke thru if I sand or radius the neck.

The method I use is mad simple. I align the joint and apply blue painters tape on the back of the joint. I do this while dry and use the tape as a hinge. I swing the headstock piece back and apply glue to both sides. Fold the joint back and apply clamps. The tape hold the piece just enough to keep it from sliding. There are a couple of pictures on my profile page that shows one clamped up. I use the wood screw type of clamps and have no issues. Before I was using a variable angle clamp but this allows me to glue up a bunch at a time.

Lightly sprinkle play sand on one of the preglued faces. As you tighten the the clamps down the sand will bite into the two faces and stop shifting. Go lightly, doesn't take much and stay away from the edges.

I do something similar to what Naz said...I use really fine sawdust and sprinkle it over the glue, then let the glue tack up a little. Rarely have an issue using that method. I think we all have plenty of sawdust to go around.

I went with Don Goguen's suggestion, which certainly helped, but the biggest thing was getting proper mini bar clamps by Irwin. That made things quite a bit easier.

Good clamps are key with this type of joint. I use these.

I glued up 2 jigs over the week end and used Don Thompson's suggestion with the sand. SWEET! I still let the glue get tacky as usual but just added a very very slight and light dusting of sand. What a difference! Thanks for the topic Scotty C. Great thread!
