thanks guys
I bought a length of xopper tubing (3/4" inside diameter, I think: whatever fit my left hand ring finger), and used a hacksaw to cut off my stubby slide. I like the "grip" of the copper on the acoustic strings.

It did turn my finger green for the first couple of days, but that has passed. :)
I use copper too, I agree with Tres that it gives a sort of "bite" on the strings.

There used to be a number of commercial slides that were made as rings and such, so you could use 'em when you wanted but still fret normally. Check one of the big music outlets.
Hey Kevin, I could make you a stubby slide. I have been selling bottlenecks on ebay for a couple years. Just let me know how big you would like the inside diameter, and what length you would like and I will try to find a bottleneck to suit you.

Also, if anyone else from the nation here purchases a bottleneck, I will knock $3 dollars off every slide purchase as a CBG Nation discount. Just make sure you message me and let me know you are a member here when you purchase.

Glass slide made from a wine bottle. I used a Dremel tool, with a cut-off disk. I just kept going around the neck until there was a cut about 1/32" deep. I tapped the neck on a table (gently) and it just popped right off. I then poured a little water on my cement porch and ground the edge smooth.

Me, too. I am not handy and tools are dangerous in my hands!

Nation member John Stax makes these ones for $15

he's a real decent guy and works in a metal working profession, so theyre a top quality product.  His website is here  http://cigarboxguitar.com.au/slides.htm

I have a handful of 3/4" steel bushings I picked up from Lowes and a local hardware store.  They come in lengths of 1, 2 and 3 inches.  They are a couple bucks a piece and are good 'n heavy.

Here's a vid of the first time I tried the longer slide on my 6-string:  http://youtu.be/zmThf_n3SRE
