I've been reading and looking at pictures of lap-steels.
Some have slots for the strings on both nut and bridge or sometimes only the nut? My string spacing a little off but usually just nudge strings into place when using bolts as nuts and bridges on a cbg. First lap here so I've used aluminum as nut and bridge with straight edges on both..no notches yet. I can't seem to find an answer as to whether to notch or not...lapsteels vary like cbgs so sny advice appreciated.

If you've got the strings pulling string across and lining up nicely then you can skip the slots in the saddle and nut but there are plenty of steels with slots in em for sure
Cool. Thank you. I'll probably have to slot because it's off...just a little off but enough that it will need help. Would you slot both nut and bridge or just one or other..or does it depend where it's not lining up most?..bridge, nut etc...
That makes sense! Pretty much got to see how it all lines up once the strings are on...can't tell until I've done that. I was trying to determine beforehand which for me is almost impossible. Thank you
Thanks I'm using just aluminum pieces for both nut and bridge (pic). I'll just have to string up the thing and start adjusting/slots. Thanks for the tips about 0 fret. I'll have to read up more.
...I wonder if I place a bolt (to keep strings in line in addition (near) to the nut and or bridge how that changes the scale length and the frets already drawn/cut in ? I might have to try that.

If you are fretless, john as it seems, scale is not such an issue, but if you add a bolt in between your nut and bridge,THAT bolt will in effect be your nut or bridge in place of the original,i don't know if i've mis read your post, but anything dictating string alignment needs to be on or outside effective scale length

Darryl, You read it right.fret markers though not actual wire frets. I'll need to come up with something to hold the strings in alignment without changing the actual bridge and nut locations or incorporate slots in the existing bridge and nut.
Gonna try this although the bolt stands higher than the nut. I might try some string retainers possobly ...although now I can see just how much the strings holes shoulda been drilled straighter ...I could have avoided slotting the bridge at least. Oh well. It's the only lap I ever attempted so I'm alright with all the frankenstein stuff.

John,i tried to bring up a couple of pics of simple string guides, but i never really thought much of it at the time so they aren't very obvious, but what i've done in the past is to place a small brass screw in the line that you want, remove the screw, drill a 1/16 hole in the shank, cut the head off, round the top, then re insert the screw using a 1/16 drill as a wrench, then feed your strings through the hole on the way to the tuners/tail,you end up with just a post,i think it looks ok
