I can't answer you but I sure will be watching the answers. I have not had good luck with Rust-oleum on bare wood. That said I am spraypainting a box with Rust-oleum Ultra Cover this morning. The box was already painted black, I just wanted it blacker.

Are you looking to paint the whole box or designs on the box?

I am interested in painting on the neck where fret inlays would normally be, and I will probably end up painting the entire box, and then put designs over it. For some reason I have a desire to make a Dale Earnhardt themed guitar, think racecar decals, etc. Nothing too elaborate. I thought oils and acrylics would be an awful choice because of their weight and substance. An artist friend of mine suggested the paint pens to do the decals after the box is blacked out. Maybe I'll leave the wood unfinished for the most part and just do decals... tough stuff huh?

For painting a whole guitar I find car spray paint is easiest to give a nice smooth finish - you could then use waterslide paper to add the decals (easy to turn photos into decals) and finish off with car lacquer to give a long lasting finish. Or if you leave the wood bare you could still opt for waterslide decals and finish in lacquer.

On the other hand a decal done by hand would be unique :o)
