I don't have a pro fret saw just a small saw. I've never done any fretting but have some medium fret wire. Any help here to measure or cut the same depth and width most appreciated. I'd like to practice first but don't want to waste what fret wire I have. Thank you

When I first started fretting, I used a standard coping saw, and the width of the blade was very close to the depth of the tang on the fret wire.

It's a coping saw I have ...how did you stay consistent depth for all the frets? Did you do one and try to stay consistent with the rest? Eyeball and test or another technique ...thanks

If I recall, I cut until the top of the blade was even with the top of the fretboard. I would test on a piece of scrap first.

Ok this helps ...just gotta try it. Thank you

Yup.  Exactly what I do.  Works great.

I use a junior hacksaw to cut my fret slots I stick masking tape down each side of the fretboard and mark a line 2mm for medium fret wire ,that gives me a depth guide

exactly how i do it . awesome !

Junior hacksaw works great for me, you will have to make sure the slots are 90 deg. to the fretboard and cut a little lower than the depth of the fret otherwise the fret will bend sideways - all comes through practice, you're going to have to waste a bit of fretwire!  buy your fretwire in one or two foot straight lengths and it will be much easier to mount, not off a roll (-;

90 degrees meaning straight to the fretboard yes?Looking up junior hacksaw right now...
And thank you

Coping saw, use fine blade and use a hammer to flatten the wavy-ness of the blade. Saw to a depth with the top of the blade flush to the top of fret board. Replacement blades readily available from Home Depot or Lowes.

Actually I've had better results with this than using an expensive fret saw from StuMac.

The greatest challenge is cutting all the frets parallel to one another.

Good Luck

I have some kind of small saw like a dovetail saw I bought from StewMac ages ago. This provides a nice stiff straight blade at the right width. I glued some plexiglass depth stops to it. I flipped it around in it's holder to make it a pull saw vs. a push saw.

I use a square when getting the saw started to make sure it's square/parallel. I actually start with a Xacto saw (thinner saw) to establish the slot, then finish it off with the correct width and depth saw. It's easier/more accurate than trying to do it all with one saw.

I imaging the coping saw with waiver while trying to cut straight. I have one of those plastic meter boxes for curting angles but the stability is gonna be an issue with the coping saw. I'm gonna look for a junior saw or some kinda saw that is ridgid somehow
