Fret scale

New to this, so it may be a "simple" sounding question. On my first build, I went whole hog and tried a fretted one. Scaled it off a Telecaster. I'm guessing the first fret distance from nut is measured from the last nut/string contact point? How do you compensate for that when using a round bolt as a nut? I eyeballed it and the note at first fret was sharp. Ended up re notching nut slot and moving bolt up towards head. Got close, but still not great. I'm thinking it's some basic math that I obviously missed.

Best fix is to not use a bolt. Use something that will emulate the way a real nut is, with its leading edge perpendicular to the fingerboard (or top surface of neck if not using a fretboard.)

Go here - http://www.stewmac.com/freeinfo/Fretting/i-fretcalc.html - then put in your scale length and it will tell you the distance. Or you could use a thin piece of stick, and move it in the nut area until it is right, and center your bolt there.
