Well , I but the bullet and bought some simple open gear tuners from this site.
I'm looking for some posts about spacing and how to put them on? I haven't received them yet but I'm trying to get a jump start. I usually make on 3 string and plan on making a 3 string but is also like to make a 4-6 string slide guitar....frets are another story and for another time...thanks

This is great help! Thank you very much. I did not stagger the tuners but will next time.

i had a lot of trouble with those soft screws too, better to throw them away and buy some better quality tuner screws, they need to be tight !  some easily available on ebay (-:

Hi Jon,

If you "put a loop" on the end of your headstock so you can hang your guitar on a nail (etc.) on the wall, then you will want to have the tuners located on both sides of the headstock so the guitar will rest "flat" against the wall. If you put all the tuners on one side (or use a 1x3 set of tuners), then the guitar will rest at an angle such that the sound box (et al) jets out from the wall at some big angle instead of sitting there parallel to the wall. That'll be 2 cents, please.

-Rand.

Thanks Rand,
What do you mean loop? A hole through the headstock?

I find the bike bell helps!,... but the nylon tuners seem to work ok if supported both sides in a tight hole.

I dont like the cheap closed silver china tunes as they dont seem to keep tune too well, but the black ones are mildly better

fender copies like Shane Wag uses seem to work well for a bit more dosh.

I have found a way to get eye bolts to work ok,  but just wish I could drill a hole in them.

I like to take the economy tuners apart and then use the steel plates as templates for laying out the placement. You only need to take a apart one of each "side". Do pay attention when you take them apart as they have bushings that need to go back the way they came out. I can then use the template to trace the outline of the tuners to make sure I have 1. adequate space between them. 2. Accurate placement of the holes for the pegs and screws 3. a pleasing arrangement. Just make sure you put everything back together exactly the way it came apart and also keep in mind which side of the head you are working from so you don't do everything backwards!

That's a great idea...thank you!
