So far on my 2 builds I've screwed the necKs down...but is there a better way to attach necks rather than all the way through the body?
reason I ask is tbh I really dont want to be going at the designs on the boxes ..I want to try and leave them as intact as possible...hope this makes sense.
Cheers
Andy

Many Thanks for the quick reply may I say to start. Thats a very nice build you have there in the photo...Its certainly something that i am going to be experimenting with in future builds.
Thank you very much for the advice !
Cheers
Andy
If you go through the photos, there are several pictures of attachments that don't go through the box. Unfortunately (well it is not unfortunate) there are a lot of pictures to go through. But it is worth the effort. You can re-enforce the inside of the box and have a block to bolt the neck to.

Randy, that is a great looking one. I like that look.
I'm just lookinmg through now , wow there is ALOT some are almost wrks of art..I am impressed..hope my builds are nearly as good over time.
I will have a look into reinforcememtn ...cheers.
Randy, Have you done this with a non-reso design? Do you lose much volume by the contact of the "undercarriage" with the box? Also, I can't tell from the pic, is the undercarriage only as wide as th box, or is it wider? Nice work.... can you post 360 degree pics? the best, Wichita Sam

Howdy Christopher, I have a few that I did where I built a frame that ran under the box.So the neck would attach to the heel, that`s the part of the frame that extends past the front of the box on the bottom.. Also you can extend it out the back of the box on the bottom to use as your tailpiece. You just have to build it up a little to just below the top of the box so you get a nice angle for your strings. Doing it this way you won`t be cutting into the box, except for the soundholes. You can just put screws on the inside bottom of the box to the top of the frame. I`m like you I really don`t like putting the stick through the box either, but I`ve done a few like that. The one pictured above is a under the box frame cgb banjo I did. I used a 6" hand drum for the banjo pot. Worked out really well.
If you look at Randy's pictures it looks like it is only as wide as the neck. Pretty unique build.

I make very few neck thru CBGs these days. I put a block in at the heel, or sometimes a thru' stick down the whole box, and screw the neck to that. If you are coming to the UK CGB Fest I'm sure this is the sort of thing that is going to come up in the builders' workshop sessions.

I certainly will be attending the CBG fest, It looks really good!

I used to do thrunecks, but have gotten into stopping the neck at the box, and using the underneath of the box as the front of the guitar, thus you can open the box from the back. To do this you need some kind of support for the neck to go through.
I have been using steel plates and weld a bolt thread onto the back, thus extending the neck all the way through the box and leaving some adjusment possibilities there too.....
Next up I will revert to through necks again, as I just found an lod Oak bed as a supply for the wood....
Thanks for the advice...See what I can do with my next build...cheers
