I name is William Denson. I am a Gunnery Sergeant in the USMC. I am currently stuck in the hospital and heard a Corpsman named Matt Borczon playing a Cigar Box Banjo. I was immediatly hooked. I love old time music and this instrument has a unique and wonderful sound. I have to have one, I am just not sure how to go about it. Matt suggested I join the website and talk to you guys. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi guys, just wanted to throw mt 2 cents in here. Gunnery sargent Denson is one of the best guys I have met here ion some time and that is saying something. Even as a patient he spends most of his time looking out for all the other guys on the ward. He has one of the best can do attitudes I have seen since I got here. He is due to go home soon so I think the builder will just need to send it to his home in the states. I have been asked in the past how to get a guitar to the patients here, but as we usually only see them for a day or two before they ship home for more definitive care. This is the first guy here as a patient who I was able to steer here and I promise you you will not a more deserving person anywhere. I sure hope one of you can hook him up. Diane, it was your banjo he heard me play and was knocked out by the quality of the sound you can get out of your banjo. I am amazed by it as well. Thanks again
matt

Hi William,

Welcome to the Nation!! Sorry you are laid up, hope it is nothing serious and that you mend quickly.

Did you specifically want a banjo, or a 3 or 4 string guitar? Let us know what you are looking for and we can try to find a builder who can hook you up with one.

william, thanks for your service, my son is presently a "poolee" (?) and can't wait to graduate so he can get serve his country - he so wants to be an infantryman - i don't have any banjos, but i have a license plate resonator and a dog dish resonator both 3 strings and  have piezo pickups - i usually like to build matching or complementing amps to go with them, but the "great storm" that just blew thru here stopped my progress for now, but should be up and building in the next day or so - i'll post pics if you're interested

Rich,

I appreciate the response. I am in the infantry and love it. Your son would definately be in good hands if he decides on the Marine Corps. I am not familiar with a resonators. I spoke with Matt and he said that my best bet is to talk to you about it. I would love to see some pictures and get some advice from you. I am a big fan of old timey music. Any advice would be great. Thanks for your willingness to do this for me. Time is one of the greatest gifts that you can give someone and you can't get it back. I am humbled by what you and all of the builders on this website do for evryone. Thanks again for your time.

Dan,

Thanks for your help. I replied to Rich and am seeing if I can get some pictures and advice from him. I love the way the 3 string banjo sounds. I definiately want to stick with 3 strings and I am curious about the resonators as well. I would eventually like to own both, but that will be later on down the road. Any advice you can give would be welcomed. Thanks for your time.

I think I would start with a 3 string CBG and see how you like it and learn to play them in open tuning. Reso's are nice, but I have never built one myself, so my knowledge is limited. It sounds like Rich is going to fix you up, so I will leave you in his capable hands.

william, my son is so into the marines that he just got a pair of converse he designed himself that has "Semper Fi" stitched into the side of each one - i recently sent a 3 string and amp to corpsman mike davis there at the hospital, but i never heard whether he got it or not, if you could run that down, and see how you like it - i don't have any made like that right now, but could have one in a week or so (if the weather warms up - we have had record breaking cold here for the past 2 weeks and my shop is out in an old milk house and it's too cold to work out there right now - i suggested the resonators because they are done - they play just like a non-resonator, but have a metallic twang to them - if you like old timey music, it might be just the thing - i'll load some pics today and you can see - you can hear a license plate reso here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhoOn8OpmuU&feature=player_embedded - i don't say mine will sound just like that, but in the neighborhood - if you see matt or mike, ask them if my guitar and amp got there - thanks
william, here are pics of the 2 guitars i have available now - don't feel obligated to take one if you want something else - i can make whatever you like - i have started matching amps for these, but the amps won't be ready until after the weather clears (which looks like this weekend) an i have a day or so to finish them - you can look at other guitars i've made on my page here on cbn - i have most of the boxes in these pics, if you want to pick one out and then wait until i can get it built - i'll post a pic of my son's converse when he gets back this weekend from having surgery now so it won't slow up his ship date

Rich,

I like the license plate CBG a lot. I am a begginer so do you think I would do O.K. with that? How are the frets set up? Thanks again for your help.
