I made the mistake many years ago of putting my workshop under the room where my wife watches TV. I am now retired and at any hour during the day I would like to cut / sand / drill. But wife is also retired now. So we have a schedule (fair) so as to when I can cut / sand / drill that also allows her noiseless TV time. (By the way, most of my tools produce noise at 90db or more, which is hazardous to hearing - I do wear ear protection when I work. I already have tinnitus.)

I am working on build 14 / 15 / 16.

At breakfast this morning wife asked me "When will you stop building?"

Answer - "when I can't build anymore"

Question - "what does that mean?"

Answer - "if I have arthritis or my eyesight is gone"

So, fellow builders - when will you stop building?

Understand completely John, my left ear rings and my right ear answers. I'm deaf in my left, hard of hearing in my right and selective hearing in between!(got it from my kids)

I'll stop when the urge to play is stronger than the urge to build
So no time soon
Workshop is 100' from the house so no complaints from the wife!

Hey Ben, that's where I am too, the urge to build is greater than the urge to play.

II've heard my guitars in more capable hands and I can say I build better than I play!

Stop building? is THAT even possible? We haven't even scratched the surface of possible combinations of wood, metal & strings, let alone tunings and chords. And what else on the earth gives us builders the sense of well being that we need in this universe. Stop building? I think it best sums up, as others have said, when they pry my tools from my cold dead hands.

Keep on trucking' Duane! Hey, when I can't build from scratch, there's always kits!!!

I can not seem to totally quit.

I'm sure it keeps us feeling young and that's ok! ;-)

Like Duane M.,.,I probably wont be aware that i have quit building.,.,wind will still rattle the old boards.,.,notes on the wind.,.,.,if I do quit, I don't want to know.,.,

I build to keep my sanity so its in the best interest in mankind that I keep building.

You can build with just hand tools Joe but it is hard word.

You're right, you can build with just hand tools. I was impressed by a photo a few years ago where somebody submitted a photo of their most recent build, photographed in their workshop - workshop was the left side of their desk and the drawers beneath housed the tools they had used.

When the termites eat all my scrap wood, all my metal stash rusts away, and the ants pick my bones clean.
