I am just about to fit a mini Humbucker pickup to my first hubcap guitar, can anyone suggest the best method for cutting out a neat hole in the hubcap face for the pickup, small grinder, reciprocating saw, drill holes and hacksaw ?? good advice would be most welcome.

I use a die grinder with a cut off wheel, goes pretty quickly so be careful. A dremel with a cut off wheel will work and be a little easier to control.

how thick is the hubcap? you could drill a hole and use a nibbler or a fret saw..

start the cutout a little smaller than your desired finished size, and use a rotary tool with a stone/grinding tip to sneak up to the finished size.

Nibbling tool is really accurate... I use it for cutting license plates . . .

as long as it's not too thick...

Thanks John, the hubcap is early 1960's and is quite robust with a bit of thickness to it, think a Dremel will be my better option for control, accuracy and finish.

You can cut it small, finish it with a grinding wheel or file... good plan!

I just did this on my own hubcap - used a drill on the inside of any rounder corners and a cutting wheel in my drill for the straight lines - finished with files and it looks great.

Thanks Mark, think I will do that and try a cutting wheel in a small but powerful mains pistol drill I have. Was going to purchase a Dremel but I think the above mentioned should do it.
