I can't seem to find any information on (all things being equal) whether there is any difference in putting the neck through the box or mounting it on top of the box.

Opinions?

Actual experience?

Thanks

Makes sense.  I was going to buy the gitty pure and simple kit.  Looks like its bridge does rest on the box which should alleviate what you're describing, yes?

Ya, I was thinking that the Gitty kit will deaden the "soundboard" of the instrument as the back of the neck will be pressed against it.  The bridge straddles the neck and touches on the soundboard on either side of the neck so you've divided the SB into 2 much smaller and less resonant areas.  Probably not a huge deal here, but something to consider.

Thanks for the graphics.

I get plenty of volume out of my face-mounted-neck diddley-bo, just cant' see the pretty graphics on the cigar box. Mountain dulcimers are made that way, and play well.  I do recommend build some of each, the experience and results will be a boon for later build decisions.

Thanks, JL.  I intend to build a few (fretless, thru-box as my next) as I need something to occupy me over the winter.  Seems like the kit I mentioned is a decent start and cheap enough.

Hey - is this the Missouri El Kabong from the Bean ????

No idea what you're referring to...so probably not!  :)

Hey El - I go to a Blues Fest every year down in Bean Blossom, Ind. - and enjoy spending time with a wide cast of colourful characters, all with "forum names" - one of them is "El Kabong" but probably not the same one.

Nope...not me.  I chose this from the cartoon dude who hit stuff with his guitar!  :)

I prefer the look of a through neck design but I have built some top mounted neck guitars in workshops because of the ease and speed. Sound has been satisfactory with both styles.

Here's a mockup of the way I build my through necks.

Absolutely okay with me. :-)

both ways have been done successfully - try both! :-)

I ordered one of the CB Gitty Pure and Simple kits with the Piezo transducer.  Looks like it'll take 20 minutes to put it together once it arrives.  I'll try it through the custom tube amp I built a few years ago (MarCh, half Marshall JCM800 half 60s Fender Champ, point to point, NOS components and Mercury Magnetics iron) and let you know how it sounds.

Thanks for the info.  I'm going to start looking for a fretless, through box style kit to ask the family for as a Christmas gift so if anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear them.

Thanks
