Hey guys.  Just finished my first resonator and I'm not happy with the sound.

1-it is very tin-y sounding... too much

2-Any abrasion or tap on the body is picked up... even my voice if I talk at the body or pickup.

The body is hand made with poplar, 1/2 inch thick.  Hollow body.  Dog Bowl resonator.  Pick up is hand wound and epoxy'd to the inside of an altoid lid.

To attempt to mute it some I put rubber on the inside of the altoid lid around the outside and added some hot glue under the surface.  I also added two small strips of some light foam materisl to the underside of the body around the pickup.  No change...

Any ideas how to remove the sensitivity of the pickup?

I'm curious if the problem PUP still acts like a mic without strings over it? If so that suggests the lid/coil attachment is not solid and rigid and the coil picks up the lid vibrating more/less than the coil.  I have a few ideas on fixing it if that proves out...

Yes, it is still very sensitive... microphonic...

Attaching photo below....

It will, it basically is a primitive microphone with an enormous diaphragm. But does the coil pick up the lid vibrating, or does the cool pick up itself vibrating within (against) the tin ??

It might make a cool stomper if rebated into some reject box/plank, that's my best suggestion for it.

Photo of the underside of said PU.  Lots'o hot glue under it and some foam...  still sensitive as heck.  I think Bug hit the problem on the head.   I'm open to hearing other theories tho...

Add a tone capacitor and tone pot
The. You can warm it up a bit

Essentially you have built a diaphragm microphone if your poles don't protrude, as above pic shows

especially if the coil is loose or can vibrate with the lid..

However if that coil was fitted to the bottom of your dog bowl and the magnet fitted to the base so it can vibrate up and down as the bowl vibrates, that would be kinda cool.

See my bugomatic pickup design which use a floating magnet on a spring so you can shove them anywhere on the sound board and they work..

Again they pickup like a piezo would which is exactly what you get, for the same reason.

See Bugs "Sloth" song for how they sound... they also work as a magnetic as well

so you get a special tone from them unlike anything else...but not such a good tone lol

I aint crazy about piezos.... or their sensitivity to vibrations/handing noise.  I also really like making PUs.  I take satisfaction in making them...

On my PU there is a flat piece of circuit board between the magnet/coils and the lid. Then that circuit board is epoxied to the lid.  I find it difficult to believe that there's any movement between the magnet and the lid.  However, there could be lid vibrations to the sides where I hot glued... but I am surprised the hot glue wouldn't stop that.

Here's a cut out view on how I constructed this PU.  I agree I need to extend some poles on the next one... above the lid.
