This is my first plan for a cigar box violin. I tried to fit the common violin sizes. The box size is some 230mm×130mm×30mm. What do you think? It will work? I need some advices...

I would like to, but I have not yet tried a CBV. So I cant comment on if it will work or not.

But I would like to know why you are trying to fit the common/normal size?

Because of the menzura or the scale. If it is too short it is hard to play I think.

Thank you! I will ask them!

Hi david,

I just finished my first fiddle. It was built for a friend that plays alot. Here are some tips.

The angle of the neck sould be a little less. Try 5 to 8 degrees. also be carefull of the weight. Mine is a little heavy.

Check out my page for some pics.

The angle of the neck is exactly 8 degrees and it seems ok and weight is also ok. I mean I have no idea what weight it should be but it dosen't seem too much for me. I think maybe the box you used was a little heavy. I couldn't try it with bow yet but it seems that it is working! Thanks for the advices!

nice job david. I know how challenging they can be.

You're on the right track; see my blog for more info on this approach. You will need to run the neck through the box to get a solid attachment, most likely; I ran mine through at the angle needed to fit under the lid, and it acts as a bass bar as well.

If that is not a custom built neck, you will have to create one in order to have the correct scale length to play in tune. Building a cigar box violin is very difficult, because of this, but doable. Take at look at my page for the two I have built.  Both were successful and play "violinistically".

Thanks for your comments! The system seems ok and solid. The neck and the plate that holds the box is made of one piece of wallnut. As the box is glued to the plate almost on one third of its surface and the end pint that holds the strings is attached to a tailpiece inside the box the power of the strings push the box to the heel. (Does this sentence make any sense?) I inserted bassbar in the box that also strengthen it in the same direction. Anyway when I stringed it up the box didn't move a milimeter upwards. I choose this solution because the box is just 240mm×145mm×37mm so I didn't wanted to steal space from here. The mensura of it is 320-330mm so it is 4/4 violin. That is why I used that huge heel and longer neck (the neck is 160mm, the heel is some 100mm) The most tricky part was the radius of the fingerboard I couldn't manage to sand it as it should be but it still seems to be playable. I couldn't wait to try it with a bow.

Good for you; I hadn't realized when I left comments that you had completed your project. In this business, whatever works in the end rules the day! Happy future building!
