I am new to this type of building. I am building my first CBG. I have a couple of "New Guy" questions. I am building a four string. This is what I have so far.

This is my first build

Should I Fret it??????

Ascustic or Electric?????

Thanks in advance

First of all - Your work area is far too tidy!!!!!! It won't have no soul!!
Just kiddin' around!!!!
Do you like to play slide???
Going electric is pretty simple with a couple of disc piezos - gives you both options.

Besides, this won't be your only one - looks good so far tho.

Thanks....

It's clean because I spent 3 hours cleaning up yesterday after building some wine crates

Make sure your fretboard, whether you fret it or not, is raised above the lid of the box,and not flush, or below the lid.

Acoustic is easier, but a simple piezo pickup is easy too.

I recently finished my first CBG and LOVE it. The neck is flush with the top and not fretted. I did mark roughly where frets would be on the top of the neck with a pencil and it seems to do me fine. My 11 yr old son now wants his own so I am starting another tonite. I chose not to fret because I wasnt sure how to do the frets. Any help here? Oh, and your shop is crazy clean!!!!!!!

Check my page here on CBN and you will find a how-to video on how to do fretting.

Hope it helps.

Great Video, thanks

If you go with fretless, the the height of the fingerboard above the body is not as important as if you are fretting the neck.

why does it have to be above the box? you can adjust string height with the nut and bridge

It does not "have" to be above the body, but in my experience, you will end up with a nicer instrument with no playability issues if you leave a little more room between the strings and the body.

Some people find that they have problems strumming with a pick if the strings are too close to the body, and the pick keeps hitting the body.

It really all depends on the individual, and if you are happy with the way it plays, than that is all that counts.

I am also looking for ideas on tail pieces, I'd rather make my own, don't want a factory made one.

Here's a few I commonly use Bob
