Okay, I'm up to number 3 now....with about 10 people on my wait list for on of those "cool cigar box guitars you're building". I'm making one for my grandfather, using a hardwood floorboard from his old house for the neck, part of a deer antler that he found in his woods as a bridge and nut, and looking for an older cigar box for the body. When he saw the first two I built, he started telling me about how his mom, my great-grandma, used to play a cigar box violin, and seemed really interested in having me build him a CBG. He's an awesome man, so I want to make this one pretty cool and meaningful. He worked at GM/Allison for years, so I think I'm going to try to work some memoribila from that in, as well as his hunting/farming lifestyle.

Jason,
That is awesome. I love how you're going to use meaninful materials in your build.

The only thing close to a "tribute" I've gone is carving out the recipient's initials for soundholes... not quite as in-depth as what you've got planned! Be sure to share some pics when it's done!
How about some some pictures of GM/Allison equipment dec-opag-ed (Don't know how to spell it) or pictures of his or grandma's farm on the box. I have never done this but I have thought it would be neat.
That's kinda what I was thinking.....get some decoupage glue and do up some clip-art on the back o' the box or maybe inside, to be visible through the soundholes. This thing is gonna be sweet when it's done.

I built this folkart John Lee Hooker tribute CBG.... it's now in the hands of a westcoast pro bluesman that knew JLH.

Loved reading about the git you're making for your grandad- isn't that what its all about? using materials with a connection to that person, materials with meaning. You can't buy that in shops.SOUL.
Jason that's great , Cann't wait to see how it turns out (be sure and post pics)....I'm sure it will be something that he will always treasure...
My favorite CBG guitar I've built (the one I play when the mood strikes me), is a tribute of sorts to Salvadore Dali.

Thanks! This one I haven't installed any electronics, and in my opinion, it sounds great. I may leave it as an acoustic only. Those Curly Head deluxe boxes have a great sound and timbre. They project really good too with a nice warm tone. Also, they have a neat little lip on the inside so you can secure the neck really good.

Thanks again!
I've made a few "tribute" CBGs using decoupage photos, subjects include Bo Diddley, john Lee hooker, Janis Joplin and Carolyn Wonderland.
