Tried making a spot pickup from a small relay coil and a Harbor Freight button supermagnet, with a machine screw for a mounting bolt / polepiece. The bolts will conduct the field as if you were using rod magnets.  Two magnets on the bottom end will double the sensitivity.  Surprising bit of volume from an old boom box amp, not sure if the output is compatible with a real amp.
