Then again I know someone who used a cardboard cigar box and it soundes great. No hard and fast rules really but I don't think balsa would be a good material. Not dense enough.

Given me some ideas here. License plate to one side and carpet to the other would give two different sounds.

At 8:14am on March 16, 2009, smojo said…: Volume's never going to be great acoustically due the samll body and construction of a cigar box. You can experiment with different materials for the bridge and nut and try different strings. Theoretically heavier strings give more vol but not always obvious. Also try tuning to different keys. Sometimes a box seems to play louder in certain keys or string tensions.

LEDS can be bought by the samll bagful, you have to ask for the screend wire and resistors etc but they should know what they are.
