Hello all,
I've just read your comments and the 'ole brain kicked in. I've checked my ancient Roberts R707 radio and there are two input sockets on the top for 3mm jack plugs. I've never tried but if someone fancies a go and the radio is cheap enough! Just a word of warning - this radio requires 2off 6 volt batteries which were heavy to lug around and a bit costly which was the reason that I stopped using it.
My personal opinion is that the kids loudhailer sounds a better idea. I fancy trying that myself.

Hi Colin - now that is really neat - we don't have that store near here but I will certainly have a look around. I see on Amazon there is a 15w version for 12.99 too! If that works (I am sure you're right) it is a very simple solution - thanks

Hi Brian, I bought one of these to turn into a cigar box amp (which I haven't finished yet!), it cost £4.95 from my local B & M store. I would imagine they can be bought from numerous toy stores as the World Cup is nearly upon us! It has 5w output, volume control and an On/Off switch. It requires 4 x C batteries (not included) which I have changed to 6 x AA rechargeable. It's quite easy to take apart and has two wires connected to the microphone which I'm going to cut and connect to a 1/4" chassis socket and then the whole thing will go into a wooden wine box. Measures approx 23cm x 20cm.

Hope that helps!

You could look for one of these toys and replace the mic with a guitar jack.

Cheers Carl - yes I figured on disconnecting the tuner but not sure if just plumbing in the jack would do it - saw some lovely old Roberts radios this morning which would look really cool if it works. Now old computer speakers... heading for the attic!

Can't help personally, but have a google for adding line in into a car stereo for MP3 players. Principle is the same, but you should find a cheap old radio is mono already. You just need to find where the tuner circuit plumbs into the amp circuit, and add a switch or even just cut it and use a jack if you never plan to use the radio again.

Or with a bit of a hack around, you might be able to make one of those cheap radio mikes that put you voice over a spare channel work with a guitar, not touch the radio and busk electric wirelessly, added geek value to the old timiness. Something like

Also look at converting computer speakers to use as an amp. Especially useful with battery powered ones.

Hi all - anybody know if there is a simple way to convert a radio into an amp - been asked to busk with some guys at a festival and we only have one portable battery amp between us - presumably a radio has a mini amp so it should be possible to attach a jack socket somehow to one of the twiddly electronic bits? You guessed it - I know sod all about electronics!

I agree Family Tree is a standout sound. But even his more straightforward guitar/ acoustic-type tracks have something truly original and distinctive. I like Beware This Gunn and Mary Don't Care.
It looks like he plays a couple of standard parlour size acoustics stripped down to four strings. I'd love to know what tunings he's using.
