You know, my first thought on looking at this article, was "Duh!  How much tax money did that obvious conclusion cost?"

But, I suppose it's not that obvious.

I think most collage papers are done by students. This reads like a really lame attempt at saying the obvious. With some BS and filler thrown in to make it sound 'original'. OK a LOT of filler. like 'If you don't do something you'll eventually loose the ability to do it." To anyone out there that this bit of information is news to. "Welcome to reality." That's not science.

There is a lot more to singing that what you learn in grade school. Unfortunately most folks think holding their breath is a good idea. But that's how they sang as a kid. Most average band singers go home each night with sore throats. As they get older they damage they're throats. Some even loosing the ability to sing all together. Then there's people like Johnny Cash. Sang strong till he passed away. He knew proper singing techniques. Kept his throat healthy all his life.

Tommy, i don't think any tax money went into this. More than likely a bad grade on a collage paper. : )

There is no such thing as a good or a bad singer - just how a person is suited to a particular kind of music. Being a "bad" singer is an asset for  a Blues performer, listen to...

Hendrix - a lousy singer in almost every situation but shone on his own music, no one else could have done it better, 

Mark Knopfler - couldn't sing for toffees, his out of tune blocked nose vocals suit his style

Kate Bush, Bjork, Lady Gaga - screechy and like a little girl at a Kareoke

Mick Jagger, Jack White, Paul McCartney - shouty, strained vocals belted out like in a football crowd

Sam Smith - strained and muttered vocals - girls think this sulky style is "cool"

Tom Jones - he would make a ship foghorn sound like a penny whistle

Rappers - well we wont mention them its not singing...

...so there you go, there are no good singers, everybody is bad, it's just how it suits the music!  :-)

Slowpaw Steve T, you forgot my all time favorite cant hold a tune in a bucket singer. Robert Plant. He eventually learned to sing. Everything I've read stated for the first four albums Plant couldn't sing. That includes "Stairway to Heaven". Then there's Neil Young. He's got a voice suited for a nasal spray commercial.

Singing technique and being able to hit every note on a scale are two different things. It's more about how to breath to keep from damaging your throat. How to use your entire mid section to help ease off your throat. I think most of the names on your list have strong singing techniques. None of em sound like they would do well in a choir. : )

oh yes Planty - a voice like an air raid siren -  imitated by thousands, bettered by none!

yes its all about being able to go for hours in hot humid conditions on iced tea :-)

Neil Young found his range early on and sounds good with his music

Yup.  And ABBA - those girls could really sing.  Maybe not rock gods but perhaps pop goddesses ?

They can all sing! It's rock and roll baby! Don't have to be pretty. I looked threw all of my rock, heavy metal, jazz, and blues stuff to find someone who could hold their own against a classically trained singer. Nope. Not a single singer I like could.

I read from a very reliable source that there is two types of singers that make it. Type one is the very precise, technically accurate precision vocalist. Type two is the over the top emotional, heart on your sleeve belter. Most rock and popular music is type two. It's not how accurate. It's how much you can make your voice interesting to listen to. if all these rock and roll gods sang like they talked they wouldn't be rock and roll gods. They'd be boring.

I think the character of teenage music has changed over the years from screaming love angst to sulky monosyllabic gangsta / gun worship....listening to the stuff I allow the boys to play in the bus though has produced some interesting things to me - in the middle of all that gloom are a few bright little "I'm happeee" melodies and musical riffs so there's hope for them yet.....maybe one day they'll discover Mozart and Paul McCartney...  ;-)

I don't know anything about today's rap music, but I was really into it starting in the late 80s and continuing into the mid 90s.  Old School stuff that had a real beat, a definite need for a melodic flow and real, real emotions.  I still flip the XM dial over to have a listen when I'm driving alone.

Incidentally, I also have 3 patents, a couple publications, stuff I made on Hubble, and presently getting my Masters to teach middle school or high school.  Good friend of mine who is equally into the old stuff is Director of the ER at a big hospital nearby.  So maybe that's just a stereotype. . .

I agree, Wayfinder.  There are plenty of rap artists, lyrics and themes I don't care for.  Same goes for rock, blues, country, or whatever genre.  It can't all be lumped together and neither can the listeners and fans.
