I have white oak 2x1 inch white oak planed, and am not planning to add an extra fretboard thickness. The frets will go into the oak. I am planing to route the squareness off the back of the neck, so bearing this in mind what would be a safe width for the playable area.
It will remain 2x1 through the body, for the bridge fitting.

Hope you can help.
Thanks Phil.

1.5" wide is plenty for three strings.

Thanks for that it's what I was hoping for.
Thanks for the help, it's much appreciated.
Phil
Thanks again, I am going to try to make a router table next, to make life easier.
Best wishes.
Phil

I use 34mm with 10mm string spacing

I  thinking 1.5" width by .875" height as many necks start out with a 1.5" x .75" stock with an added .125" fingerboard but .125" thicker shouldn't be a deal breaker unless used by someone with small hands?

That will work just fine...  And still give you larger string spacing than a standard guitar.

Many thanks for the replies, and Wayfinder I am intrigued by your 2new neck mounting methods, as every time I think I have it planned out in my head,I then see where the internals of the neck are better not touching the front and back of the box thereby cutting down on the resonance.
Also routing a well for a pickup, needing the internal of the neck to be beefed up.
So knowing the best way, would be great.
Thanks Phil.
Thanks very much for this information it will help me to decide how to proceed.

I am in the process of getting all the components together before starting, as individual items will effect measurements and positioning.

Take Care
Phil.

While you are still planning consider building in an angle to the neck to give you a higher bridge this will give more downward pressure from the strings = more volume
