I'm on eBay after several conversations with folk from CBN and looking to start venturing into the world of magnetic pickups and away from piezo. I've seen some sets of three Strat style pickups with labeling for the neck, middle and near the bridge. Can I split these up and use one pickup from the set of three for three separate builds? If I could, would I need to keep them in the relative positions? So on one build I could have one near the neck, on another build have the next near the middle and so on or can I split them up and have them anywhere? Why do Strats have three pickups? Help appreciated before I end up buying the wrong thing.

I should mention that the reason I ask is I'm a cheapskate and trying to get the most bang for my buck. Pickups are expensive! luls
Everything I needed to know and a few extra morsels for the Bank of Grey Matter to be withdrawn at a later date. I've said it before and I'll say it again, you're a wonderful sausage you are. Thanks again, Wayfinder. Always available to freely offer your expertise, someone should give you a job around here! Thanks again :)
Awesome. Think I'll stick to the pickup for now rather than push my worn out brain any more. As another related question, do I need to add a volume and tone pot or just slap a jack on there? Also, I assume I need to ground this pickup? I do that by adding a wire from the pickup to a metal point away from the strings? I saw a video by ChickenBoneJohn on how to ground so I could try and follow that as best as I can if I get confusticated I guess.
Thanks again. My concern is getting the wires wrong as in not knowing which wire is which coming out of the pickup. When you say the hot wire, is it physically hot and that's how you can tell it's the right one? Are they usually a specific colour? Will it say on the pick up which is positive and negative?
In my book it's not really rocket science, they should work fine. If you want to find out how they sound, build a test CBG and swap them out to see which sounds best. As far as I know, they will work in any position along the neck. Generally, closer to the bridge will give a brighter sound and farther up the neck will give a warmer tone. The three may have different windings which may effect the tone, but they should all work regardless of location.
Thanks Thomas. I was speaking to the anonymous pick on chat the other day (I think it was him) and was told that near the neck is good for blues so I'm looking at that for a location. I appreciate you taking the time to give advice. I'll be able to check the difference between the piezo and the magnetic once I try these so should be able to get a judge from there. Exciting times. I always love learning new things. It adds spice to this life. :)
That's my preferred location as well. When I want more of a twang I'll build another cookie tin or hub cap resonator.
