Just wondering if anyone is formulating homemade stains? What combination's of materials are being used and what outcomes have resulted? I've been working with some different teas in both water and alcohol with various results.

Steel wool and water in a jar, let the wool rust way, this makes an Iron stain, and has been used in woodworking in the past long ago.
awesome tip

kool aid. lol seriously i did a sample block a while back and it works. also food coloring, clothing dye.
Awhile back someone posted about using vinegar with a steel wool pad left to soak in it. He called it ebonising. I tried it and am happy with the results. It will be darker if you use the steel wool to rub in the mixture and it takes a little while for the wood to darken up. This fretboard is oak.

I have a question. Does anyone know about Ox blood stain? I have read that in the early rural days in the US, stains were made out of blood. Mixing Methods and other binding ingredients are vague. I am assuming this stain was cooked or prepared in a way so that the blood did not go rancid. I know, a little macabre, but being frugal, nothing was wasted. True to the CBG spirit.
Thank you for your input, Keni Lee
I don't know about blood but I'm impressed by the ebonizing. I have experimented some with shoe polish (the wax based cream polishes). I haven't done one on a guitar yet but I'm planning to on my next build. With a little bit of practice I was able to get a pretty nice 3-tone sunburst (black polish, brown polish, and natural stain). I hope it works out well.
Hmmmm! I have english walnuts and the husks are rotting caused by a fly that lays eggs in them. Doesn't hurt the nuts other than turning the shell of the nut dark. I'm going to give it a try for stain.

I have done the old fashion black walnut stain, it`s a very messy job but the end result is cool. Find some rotting black walnuts and squeeze the juice from the rotting husks, I add alittle thinner and put in a jar. After a bit I pour it through a painters screen to get the big clumps out and return it back to the jar.
Coffee is pretty good for using on lighter woods to get that 'aged' look.
This stuff needs to be put into the "Secrets of the CBG Underground" group! Its Gold!
MDM,

Do you have a recipe? Is there any "trick" involved?
