Hey AD. You can hit them as soft or hard as you want. In the course of this video I go from really smacking it to barely touching it. You certainly get a more mellow sound with a light strike but it doesn't resonate as much.

and im burning wood to keep the chimney dry ,cose there is somuch rain that the black fungus is attemting to come back, its a pitty you have to hit so hard ,the sound is realy mellow but because of the hitting its allway's rhythmic, but the sound is verry well to destruct and recycle so the hitting dissapears! some use fluffie gongsticks! i know that river and have it in my sound collection allso ! see your having fun whit that ! headless video !

It certainly is. Originally these drums were made from discarded propane tanks.
