Hi there Grey Bear! looking good! Nice one ! i use 008 high E 2x Slinky,s from Ernie Ball(Brand) and the 14 for the middle one and the nickel wound 22/or 30 for the bass string the only thing whit guitar sting is you need to buy two sets,co'se no normal set carries two high E's i have them on mine and they sound teriffic! for tuning DAD(high) Mixolian ,and DAA(High) Ionian DAG Dorian,DAC Aeolian. Best start whit DAD, and work from there,i get the best sound and feel playing whit my fingers, about the build ; it looks like a home build, sins there are no marks dates or other referenses to judge by its hard to tell, google some on the picture logo, is it a E or a other letter? consurning the model its according my database a Belgium kind model, the scale from nut to bridge is a key factor How many inch? Thats all i can do Ye for Have fun Playing its easy and gives a hole lot of fun! Greeeeettssszzz A.D.
Thanks for sharing that Erasmo. I've watched her series in the very beginning while I was waiting for the dulcimer to be delivered and saved it to a mountain dulcimer folder on YouTube too. I'm glad you shared it here so I rewatched it and listened again. I can hear the same sound in the latter part of Strummelia's playing too. Not as pronounced as I'm hearing it on mine but that's likely because of old strings. So it now seems, as Strummelia says in the video, it's the unique silvery sound of using a noter. I obviously missed that the first time or more likely didn't listen closely enough. Puzzle solved it seems. New strings and enjoy!
You just won. Thanks for helping. Truly appreciated.
Thanks Wes. I think you're probably right. I'll change them as soon as I get replacements and hopefully that will solve the problem. I watched a YouTube video that daid electric guitar strings can be used too but I'm assuming them probably don't sound the same as specialist mountain dulcimer strings? I think I'll likely wait until next week when I get the right ones. Thanks for commenting.
Lol thanks Pick I'll try not to be shy in future. The result of recording with a crappy tablet I'm afraid. Thanks for the help and I'll definitely report back once the strings are changed. It will be next week but I'll definitely let you know. Any idea of the age or make of the dulcimer? I literally know nothing about it other than being told at the point of purchase that it could be from around 1980s?
speakers cranked and even with headphones i cant hear ya , but it sounds like you havent solved it yet . swap them strings out , use a heavy weight metal slide (like a spatk plug socket) and get back to us with an update . ;-) and dont be shy on the volume ;-)
